For an overview of how Microsurveys work, first read this article.


When configuring your Microsurvey, you will face the following steps:

  1. Select type

  2. Configure steps 

  3. Select audience

  4. Set Recurrence

  5. Activate

Select Microsurvey type

Start building your Microsurvey from the Chameleon Builder, by selecting the star icon. Then click New Microsurvey.

At that point, you can select the type of Microsurvey you'd like to build. Microsurvey types have fixed response components (e.g. 'NPS' has buttons for 0-10, while 'Input' has only a free-form text option etc.). Read more about the different types here

Configure Microsurvey

After selecting the type, you will see the "Microsurvey step" and you can configure it using the configuration panels. 

You can click directly on the components of your Microsurvey (e.g. buttons, text, dismiss) to start editing them. You can also edit them through the Control Panel.

Design options:

Position

Arrange where the Microsurvey should be positioned relative to the screen

Canvas

Define the width of the Microsurvey, corner radius, opacity, and background color.

Body

Add custom text and define its color, formatting, font size, and add any personalization options.

Shroud

Add a shroud that darkens the screen to highlight your Microsurvey.

Interaction options:

Dismiss

Choose a Cross or custom Text dismiss, and define its position within or outside of the Microsurvey, as well as its color, size, and whether it should fully exit the Microsurvey or snooze it.

Buttons

These options vary per each Microsurvey type, but generally allow color and label customization.

Display Rules:

Entry animation

Set an animation for when your Microsurvey first appears on the screen.

On-page Trigger

Select an element on the page which must be hovered or clicked on in order to trigger the Microsurvey. You can also append an icon or upload a custom image.

URL Rules

Define on which URL(s) this Microsurvey should appear.

Element Rules

Define which element(s) should be present or missing in order for this Microsurvey to appear.

Note: Upon configuring your Microsurvey, you should always Preview it from the Chameleon Builder, to view how it will look and behave for your end-users.

After configuring this Microsurvey step, you can add a free-form text input -- the Comments step -- and a Thank You step. You can do this directly from the top bar or from the Builder's sidebar.

Within the Comments step, you can ask a specific question based on how a user responded in the Microsurvey step, and collect qualitative feedback. The styling and position of the Comments and Thank You steps will match that of the Microsurvey step. 

Once you have included the Comments step in a Microsurvey, you can customize the content of this for each different answer of the Microsurvey step. For example, you may want to ask different questions depending on whether a user answered the Microsurvey step positively or negatively.

You can customize the following items:

  • Question copy

  • Placeholder copy

  • Button copy

  • Button action (what happens when a user clicks this)

To do this, select the relevant tab in the Chameleon Builder corresponding to the answer in the Microsurvey step for which you want to customize the Comments step. You can then select any of the individual step components (by clicking on them directly) to further configure this.

When added, the Thank You step will appear for users for 3 seconds (and automatically disappear) after they complete the previous Microsurvey/Comments step. 

Note: You can redirect users to a different page based on their button response within the Microsurvey step. Click the button to set up this redirect. In this case, you can decide not to include the Comments and Thank You steps. 

Select Target Audience

You can set for who the Microsurvey shows in the Target Audience section in the Builder sidebar. 

You can create a Target Audience using the data you send to Chameleon, using the default Chameleon data, or any data received from integrations.

Note: You can use the Actions panel to define in which pages the Microsurvey should show to set-up any triggers -- icon click, element hover, etc.

Set Recurrence

You can define a Microsurvey to repeat periodically in this section of the Builder. The Microsurvey will then repeat for users, as long as they appear inside your application after that period, and continue to match the Microsurvey rules and targeting conditions. 

When Recurrence is set the Microsurvey will repeat after the set period, which begins after the user last completes/exists the Microsurvey.

For example, if Nathan saw the NPS Microsurvey, set to repeat each half-year, Feb 1 and Janice saw it March 1, Nathan would see it again the next time they visit the app after Aug 1, and similar Janice after Sept 1.

If Rate Limiting causes the Microsurvey to be suppressed, then it will appear at the next available opportunity.

If the Recurrence is adjusted and the Microsurvey re-published, then the most recent Recurrence setting will be used.

Note: When creating a Target Audience based on a user's Microsurvey response, the most recent response will be used. However, all responses will be available within the Chameleon dashboard to view or download. 

Going live

Once you've finished configuring your Microsurvey, you can activate it. To first test out the Microsurvey live, you can target just yourself and close the Builder to preview it live.

Once the Microsurvey is live, you can edit it further, but you must always Apply edits before these changes are pushed live to users. 

Getting the data

All your Microsurveys' data will be available in your Chameleon Dashboard. You can download the data as a CSV and also connect your analytics tool to have the data automatically sent there.
