Congratulations on getting ready to activate your first tour! 

This presumes, you've created a Chameleon account, downloaded our Chrome Extension and built your first tour

Before activating your tour, it's important to ensure it looks and behaves exactly as you intend. To do this, Chameleon provides you two options:

  1. PREVIEW mode -- for experiencing how your tour looks and behaves (as a Chameleon admin)
  2. TEST mode -- for experiencing how all tours interact in your product (as an end user)

Preview mode

When building any steps in your tour, you can quickly and easily toggle Preview mode ON. This will take you out of Editing mode, and you'll see a live preview of your tour.

You can navigate the tour and your product as normal. Steps will only show when the "Trigger" criteria are met (correct URL and any element match / click you have set). The top bar will provide helpful messages if the next step is not configured to show on the current page.

Preview mode is the quickest and easiest way to see how your tour behaves. All configurations on steps (such as the button, dismiss, media etc.) will behave as for end users. Here are some helpful things to check for:

  • Do the steps look as you intended, with the correct copy and design?
  • Are they located on the correct pages and positioned as you desired?
  • Do the steps appear in the correct order and can you navigate the tour with ease?
    (Note: for tours spanning across pages, users will only be redirected if you configure the step button to launch a specific URL or click an element.)
  • Is it easy and enjoyable for a user to progress through your tour? 

Once you have thoroughly checked that your steps are working correctly, then you can test your tour live. This can help you test your audience targeting and the composite user experience across all tours you have live.

Showing a tour to just yourself

Once Chameleon is installed on your site, you can proceed with testing it live.
After building your steps, you can set the target audience for a tour. When building a tour for the first time, you may want to show it to just yourself first, before showing others. 

If you select the Target Audience as "Just Me" then it will only show live to you (or whichever Chameleon administrator most recently activates the tour). 

You can use this to activate a tour directly on your Production environment, without affecting the UX of any other user, to make it easier and quicker to deploy to others after testing. 

Once you have done this, you can Activate your tour and test it live! 

Test mode

Once your tour is live, you can try it out as an end user. For this, you will switch to Test Mode, using the Chrome Extension. Simply click the Chameleon icon in your browser to open up the modes options:

You are currently in Build mode, but you can switch to Test Mode by clicking the second tab. This will refresh the page and hide the Chameleon Tour Builder and give you the full end user experience. 

Now Chameleon will behave as if you were an end user, using the credentials and user attributes on the account with which you are identified in your product. You will see all the tours that you have NOT YET SEEN but for which you are in the target audience. 

To see tours again, simply Reset the history of tours for your user from the Chrome Extension. 

This will allow you to see your tours again live to make sure your product's composite user experience is as you expect. 

💡You can also set the Tour Delivery to be 'Each time' instead of 'Once' and this will remove the need for you to reset your history to view that tour again. 

Sharing the tour with your colleagues

Once you're happy with the tour, you may want to get some second opinions from your colleagues. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Invite them to your Chameleon account here.
    They will receive an email with a verification link. Once they click that and sign in to they will be considered another Admin user. They will then be able to see the Chameleon Tour Builder wherever the Chameleon code snippet is installed. 
  2. Update your tour to show to Chameleon admins
    Change your target audience from "Just Me" to "Chameleon Admins", and Apply Edits to your tour. This will mean that the live version will only go to your colleagues that are logged into 
  3. Ask colleagues to turn on Test Mode
    They can do this from the Chrome Extension, just as you did above. This will now show them all tours available to them that they have not seen before. 

Share with anyone at your company and beyond

To share a tour more broadly with anyone at your company, you can set the Target Audience of your tour to "Team members". This will enable it for everyone that has an email address with the same domain as yours. 

Note: for this to work, you must be sending email as a user property as part of your Chameleon installation. Learn how to do that here.

To share even beyond this, you can set the Target Audience to "Only those with link" and then use each tour's unique link to let anyone start the tour. 

Note: This requires that the first step of your tour has a URL that can be loaded. This may be more complicated if you have dynamic components to the URL (such as user ID or account name). Learn how to handle this here

Final steps to activate

Once you've tested and you're happy with how the tour triggers, looks and behaves, then you can set the perfect target audience and Apply Edits to the live tour. 

You can use a combination of user properties, events, tour history and other factors to target users that will find this tour most relevant and engaging. Learn how to do that here
